Installing Ubuntu 10.4 under Hyper-V R2

I'm currently testing Ubuntu as a cloud client ...

For my test I had to use Hyper-V as an host hypervisor.

I noticed that even if the virtual machine "addition" (understand "drivers") are built-tin in the distribution 10.4, they are not active by default.

Read more if you want to know how to proceed to have a full Ubuntu 10.4 under Hyper-V R2

1/ First create a standard "Guest" ie: 5Gb of HD, 1Go of RAM
2/ Attach a CDROM ISO with the Ubuntu 10.4 distribution
3/ Boot on the CD, proceed with the installation.
4/ After your first boot, launch the console (ie ALT-F2 and type gnome-terminal)
5/ at the prompt type sudo gedit (don't forget "sudo" to avoid read-only mode)
6/ open the file "modules" under \etc\initramfs-tools\
7/ Add the following lines :

   hv_vmbus
   hv_storvsc
   hv_blkvsc
   hv_netvsc
8/ Save the file modules
9/ exit gedit
10/ you are normally back to the prompt type, and type : sudo update-initramfs –u

You are done, with a nice Ubunto under Hyper-V.

Remarks:
* Don't make an "Ubuntu update", your installation will failed (at least at the present time 19/7/2010)
* I noticed that the mouse grabbing is not working in your Ubuntu session. This if you access your Hyper-V by RDP and from the Hyper-V mmc you connect to your Ubuntu.
As workaround you need to activate the Remote Desktop under Ubuntu and use VNC.

Ok, now here’s my own opinion about the topic.

Active Directory Domain Services

One largely discussed was the RODC, this read only DC is something good but implementation will require a serious study. This because it’s a very new feature, not only at a technical point, but also a new way of working with AD.

The interesting improvement are more about the view, control and restartability by a(n) :

Restartable AD .
Database Mounting Tool

Active Directory Rights Management Services

Well Right Management Service is not new, it’s something more “integrated”

Active Directory Federation Services

This is something I recommend for analyse by IT Manager. Do you deal with Trust ? If yes, you surely have to read if you can simplify your infrastructure. But even if you didn’t have any trust and you want to give access to your application/data to “external” users read more on the topics is recommended.

Active Directory Certificate Services

Here also it’s not something new, but largely improved by better integration and manageability.

I noticed when discussing about Exchange 2010, that many of us didn't noticed that for new feature about archiving and retention (much more visible) a new version of the dumpster is the key.

But with this new version of the dumpster we also get a better prevention against mistake in e-mail deletion's (prevention when Shift-delete) .

With this new dumpster, I encourage you to review your backup strategy. In fact the dumpster could also help you to avoid the need of a single item restore ...

I have a lab based on Hyper-V but for mobile testing I would be able to run different configuration on my laptop. Virtual PC could be a solution but unfortunatly 64 bits guest OS is not possible.
The solution I choosed is a multiboot but test OS are stored in VHD.
This will work even your laptop is not Intel-VT or AMD-V

John Toner: Here's a video demonstration about using Hyper-V Live Migration in a SRDF/CE cluster, SRDF/CE is is EMC’s geographically dispersed clustering software. SRDF/CE is an EMC proprietary product that is used to integrate EMC’s SRDF technology with MSCS You might notice that we are not using CSVs in this demo as SRDF/CE does not currently support CSVs. I'll write more on that topic later on when I find the time.

Ok,

Today, again a got a SD card with a very specific Virus...
It's "normal" that when you buy a car you have by default a "state of the art" of safety measure/instrument included in your car...Even if few high tech safety stuff are still option's.
But YOUR CAR is really SECURE related to common technology BY DEFAULT.

Do you thing that this statement is true for the IT (understand your personal computer) I don't thing so.

So, how to get the same level for your IT? I will not extend but failing your IT security could cause serious damage, personal or institutional.

At the beginning of July virtualization.info reported how VMware, Cisco and EMC (the VCE triumvirate?) are working together to execute virtual machines live migrations across data centers that are 80 km (50 miles) away from each other.

Well, what was considered an impressive yet experimental configuration in July became an officially supported scenario in September.

The three companies discussed three different scenarios for long-distance VMotion at VMworld 2009 and announced the joint validation for one of them, where VMware supports a 200 km live migration (assuming you can satisfy some pretty demanding requirements):

Les Offline Files de Windows quel super idée... si ça fonctionnait!

Essayer:

2 PC; 1 Vista , 1 XP

Le PC de bureau (XP) avec un folder en partage appeler "Photo". Le Vista (Vista)marque le share du PC en "available offline".

Vous avez donc tjr vos photos avec vous sur le Vista et heureux... Votre Vista connecter en online sur le Share vous faites une petite rotation de photo ....et "paf" la rotation sur le PC (XP) est ok et votre cache Vista est "corrupted" ... merci le Vista et ses capacités de tranfer au bit de différence ...

Apple s'attaque à RIM & Microsoft ! Destiné principalement au secteur du grand public, l'iPhone d'Apple n'a pas finit de faire parler de lui, la firme à la pomme envisageant à moyen terme de lui ajouter des fonctions destinées aux décideurs pressés.

Apple anticipe cette prochaine demande en recrutant actuellement un ingénieur « iPhone Windows Exchange/Outlook » chargé d'intégrer la division « équipe de qualité iPhone » pour tester justement la synchronisation des données via des serveurs Microsoft Exchange.

I recently (29/11) visited the « I know » event of Microsoft. I noticed that Microsoft place an RFID with a number on it so I’m not sure that it really anonymous on my access badge…

What’s an RFID, a little components that some device can sense presence and read data from it when at proximity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFID)

Ok, I understand that Microsoft can use this to better understand how to improve such seminar but :

Is this anonymous (what’s about my privacy, according last answer from MS : Yes)
